No, you don’t want to turn status reports off. Spartan requires one a day to force the camera to contact the server once a day, for setting changes, if someone runs out of credits and adds some, etc.
Some people care about battery level and signal strength. Personally, I like having them updated with every photo instead of only when status reports are requested. I think a lot of people got confused when they changed batteries but the status report wasn’t updated with that info until later.
